Penang Food Trip in April 2009 (Day03)

Alrighty, Now we had reached Day 3, the last day of Penang Trip.

First we check-out from hotel, and have breakfast at a very old restaurant next door.
From the chicken rice stall, we ordered steamed chicken, roasted pork and BBQ sauce pork.

Penang 004

Right after this breakfast, we walk to get the food we missed in Day 02.

The pan fried carrot cake covered in Axian788 阿贤人情味!
Penang 007

Though it looks normal. the special was at the cake, and pork lard the auntie use.
The carrot cake is soft and Q. Put it in your mouth, and it gets melted and slip down the throat.
Penang 009

The chef auntie non-stop cooking for her customers.
Penang 005

Look at the amount of plates been used in just 2 hours of business.
Penang 006

I feel so privileged to have tasted it. Remember to drop by this place when you are in Penang.
Penang 012 Penang 013

Apparently they have other nice delicacies too. Others are sold out, we only get to have the last piece of this
Penang 010
Nicely shaped, half transparent, nice filling, nicely served.

After the satisfying secondary breakfast, let’s proceed to Penang Road for some refreshing cendol.
This is my second bowl for this trip, the first one was on the first day, but were too rush to take picture back then.

In the evening, many will stop by on their way home from work for Teow Chew Famous Cendol.
Penang 015

Then, we went to do something that every tourists in Penang would do.
Yes, we went to buy Tambun biscuits.

After that we go 2 more mission in our menu that hasn’t been accomplished yet.
So, waste no more time.

First, is the yam cake.
Penang 020
Oooh, the yam is so well-blended with flour, the ground dried prawn paste is exquisite and topped with crispy fried onion.
They even have special packing to let customers bring home on plane.
Penang 017

As for lunch, is Curry Mee with everything – by the word everything, they literally put everything in it.
There’s squid, taupok, pig blood, cockles and noodles. Got a shock when it was served.Penang 019
The soup was relatively lighter compared to KL’s, put some sambal in it, it’ll a perfect match.
This place is about 10mins walk to Tune Hotels.

That’s a lot of foods there for the past 3 days, its time to do some sightseeing.

Old British building – currently government office (i guess)
Penang 046

Very old clock tower, the time is still correct though.
Penang 050

QE II at port
Penang 048

A little chinese temple on jetty (i was standing at Chew Jetty), not sure what jetty was that.

Penang 051

And, the artistic namely “A Celebration of Our Blue Sky” at the promenade
Penang 055

officiated by Lim Guan Eng, Penang’s Fourth Chief Minister
Penang 057

Well, that’s the end of my Penang trip. Looking forward to go again to finish one business….the Nasi Briyani Beratur!

Penang Food Trip in April 2009 (Day02)

Hi, I’m back with sequel of 2nd day route for my Penang food trip.

In the next day morning, local Penang colleague brought us to eat Hokkien Mee as breakfast.
(* In Northen Hokkien Mee = Prawn mee = Har mee in Klang Valley & Southern)
This Hokkien mee is located somewhere in the middle between Georgetown and Kek Lok Si.
This shop sells only Hokkien mee and drinks (which also serving toast and half boiled eggs).
They open from 7am in the morning, sold out around 10am.
Gotta have pre-booking before go there, unless you would wait at the shop before 7am.
It took quite a while to get serving after sit down
(that’s when toast and half boiled eggs come handy to keep our sugar level balanced and not getting fainted).
Well, its worth to wait, worth for this “heavy weight” hokkien mee.

Check out the big prawns!
Penang 007
Warning: the original soup is fragranced and spicy enough. Mixture of the sambal from spoon will bring those weak-tongue rocket flying to sky with eyes full of tears.

After exhilarating breakfast, we proceed our journey to Kek Lok Si (极乐寺 – Temple of Supreme Bliss).

Penang 023
Very well preserved and maintained. Really enjoyed the serenity sitting in the garden.
Everything seems peaceful, all the troubles fly away above cloud 9.
Penang 036

However, the beggars sitting at corridor does become eyesore of the place
Penang 028

On the way up, don’t forget to stop by to feed the tortoise.
They are extremely hungry since the low tourist season and bad economy.
Spotted a couples of young tortoise body floating in the pool, uncertain on cause of death.
RM1 for a small bunch of vege is really expensive though.
Penang 010

During the time, there was construction going on to build a roof for the big Buddha statue.
Penang 035 Penang 043

The administrators were seeking for donations by selling pieces of roof at RM30.
They still short of many roof to complete the project. Please support and sponsor if you happen to be in Penang.
Penang 057
We could write our name on it with blessings.
Visitors from Thai, Japan, Australia, India, Korea, Europe had sponsored too.

The accomplished project will look like this from the poster.
My name will be on one of the thousands roof, cool huh.
Penang 053

After a few hours touring in Kek Lok Si, its about time to have lunch.
Just right at the bottom of Kek Lok Si, there is a famous Asam Laksa stall located at the busy T-junctions.

Penang 066
Well, the taste……. hmm…. its not my preference type.

Must order the hot-N-freshly fried popiah and fish balls from the neighbour stall Uncle.
Penang 068

We head back to Georgetown by bus after the simple lunch (not really satisfying).

Once we reached Georgetown, first thing to do is quench the thirst with 100 Plus.
Then walk around town for mini shopping before landed at a restaurant for Wantan mee.
Penang 070

Then, in the early evening around 5pm, we went to New World Park located just next door to Tune Hotel.
28-5-2009 12-12-13 AM
Friend want to shop for shoes, but I spotted some white coloured boxes queue in front a toy shop.
Yes! It’s Gashapon. I gotten a huge Keroro head and a huge Tamama head. Each head could have 2 expression face. Happy!

Keroro tamama

Must try in the hawker centre in New World Park is the Ice Kacang King served with fruits namely banana, mango, papaya and a scope of peanut butter vanilla ice cream.
Penang 072

And the second must order item is Yam Cake. Dumpling is so so only.
Penang 075
The yam cake is soft, yam well-blended, served with medium size crispy fried dried prawn (虾米)
Stall that sell this yam cake can be easily spotted, cause they are the only stall with long customers queue.

After “light” snacking, we proceed to search for the expensive fried kuey teow in Lorong Selamat
(from New Park World’s main entrance with Starbucks – cross the road then walk straight for about 500m)
You will find the Auntie with her unmistakable red hat.
Penang 023

A plate of Fried kuey teow like this selling at RM6.50
With 2 giant fresh prawns, fat si-ham, crispy fried pork fat and tasty soft kuey teow, Definately worth it.
Penang 077
Be there early, they close around 6pm.

Then I spend a night resting in hotel reading Crayon Shin Chan i bought from 7-Eleven at lobby of Tune Hotel.

Will be back with Day 03 menu. Stay tuned.

Penang Food Trip in April 2009 (Day01)

This is a backdated blog about my Food Trip in Penang about a month ago in April.
Gotta warn you, it’s going to be a long blog entry with lots of photos. (of course, mainly saliva inducing delicious food)

I went with Air Asia flight because Ann got vouchers due to be redeemed.
Penang 001

Penang 004

I’m not sure if this is river in klang valley, its beautiful.
Penang 013

Well, the aircraft and stewardess still the same, you know…
And this is the famous Nasi Lemak, served steaming hot.
Penang 018

We arrived just the minute we finished the flight meal.
Then we checked in to Tune Hotel located right in the center of Georgetown, very strategic.
Penang 080

Its a new hotel opened for couple of week ago when I stay there.
The room looks clean and new, facilitated with basic necessities.

Penang 021  Penang 022
Penang 003  Penang 004 (2)
Penang 023 Penang 005

The room is great though its a bit small. Security controlled, non-smoking building with safety deposit box.
Air-conditioning, in-room WiFi, towel and toiletries are available on request with charges.

After settling down and refreshed ourselves, we took a walk down to Upper Penang Road end at E&O Hotel.
This is a place with all the happening lounge and bars. Mostly Guinness and Tiger outlets.

Penang 028

Penang 031
The classy E&O Hotel.

After a night of beers, turn to Mamak’s at corner for a bowl of hot Sup Kambing or Roti Canai, Teh Tarik, you name it.Penang 001 (2)

To be continued with my day 02 route with more food.

Last day in Bangkok

In conjunction with election that Sunday (24th Feb), sales of alcohols were banned across the whole state from friday onwards.
However TAPB provide free flow of beers to us through out the whole training. There is no signs of draught for us. Cheers!

I had Burger King for lunch. Even the burger king fries taste better, darned.
P/S: I ate in this Burger King everytime I'm in that airport,  for some reason. Tongue out

This is the view of Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok. The new one. Is pronounce as su-va-na-boom.
There is a nice decorated garden, but views were blocked by pillars and window shades, can't get nice captures.

As everyone might know that AirAsia cheap air tickets system has MAS desperately coming up with discounted ticket as well.
Its pretty obvious to see how they cut cost to accommodate those discounts.
First, the quality of air-stewardess has deteriorated (maybe this one has nothing to do with new pricing system, ahem....)
Secondly, they use really old air-plane
Thirdly, the meals are simpler

The packing looks nice. But the sandwiches are frozen cold when it's served.
I got a bun in my meal when i'm flying to bangkok, the bun was so hard that I feel like want to throw at air stewardess face.
They also serve mandarin oranges in conjunction of Chinese New Year.

However, they still serve nice cup of tea and artificially sweet orange juice Smile

Thai Food

Hi all, there was delay to upload meals I had in Bangkok, Thailand.
I gotta to say, Tom Yam soup in Thai is superb. Literally can get good delicious tom yam anywhere, anytime.
By the way, the local called chili soup instead of tom yam soup.

One of the evening after training, a group of us had our dinner in Yum Saap Restaurant.
In Thai, Yum Saap means Yummy. This shop is located at the 7th floor of MBK, a big shopping complex in city centre.

They have the menu in dual language - foreigners friendly.
They also sometimes indicates the level of spicy by chili symbol. the highest is 5 chilis.

These are the main dishes we ordered. I ordered one shrimp fried rice to go with it.
If you noticed, our drinks are filled with a lot a lot of ice. Maybe only 20% is liquid.
However, the drinks feels like normal drink after a few bites of chilli padi. Thank god to that ice.

This is my favourite, Tom Yam shrimps + squids + bamboo. very nice. missed it so much.
I accidentally bit on a chilli cutlet, tears burst out immediately. It took me few minutes to calm down again.

Hope to visit Bangkok again for the nice food.

You think you've seen it all

Thailand never fail to surprise me.

They have the busiet traffic, they have double number of toll on Freeway (in malaysia we called it highway)

This picture was taken in the middle part of the highway. So please double up the length of tolls for the total number.

And then they never fail to serve the "bestest" food, I know there is no such word, but no word can describe the "best of best" here.
As some of my friends would know I like to eat Blueberry contained pastries, e.g Blueberry cheese cake, Blueberry cheese tart.

i was so lucky to lay my hand on this heavenly made Blueberry tart. Yes, thats right it is a blueberry tart.
When i first saw it, I thought they are serving blueberry in mini tray.
Then only I found out that it actually has a small piece of biscuit hidden underneath the over flooded blueberry filling.
Mother lord of jesus christ, it taste damn good. God Bless Thailand for producing such a nice blueberry tarts.

I had my dinner at road side hawker stall, it was nice, but don't ever bother ask or mention on how they wash their dishes, ok. thank you.

By the way, no case of food poisoning, because the of chilli effect.

i hope to review something about Tom Yam, all the tom yam soup i had tried since i'm in thailand were all very nice.
it was so nice that I forgot to take picture. Therefore I could not include it's review in this blog.
Maybe next time ya.

Relaxing weekend

A.C 2005, 23rd the July

A bunch of ex-high-schoolians, had a trip to Fraser's Hill for a relaxing weekend.

Final junction that will bring us to the destination, where we'll find treasures.
junction.jpg

Fraser's Hill was named after one of the more colourful characters of the colonial era, James Louis Fraser. (Nothing to do with F&N's Fraser and Neave though). Fraser was an adventurer and fortune hunter who periodically used this area as a trading post to buy tin from Chinese miners back in 1890s.

The arrival of the British in the early 20th century saw the area being developed into a hill retreat. Fraser's Hill's popularity as a tourist resort has not diminished over the years, attracting not only locals but foreign tourists as well.
mansiononhill.jpg

Everything happens for a reason. With the fresh air, chilly weather, breathtaking scenery, and located just 40km from Rawang, it's no wonder Fraser's Hill has become a laid back hotspot for citizens. The air is so fresh that it crisp as we breathe in.
breeze.jpg
(Featuring cheery Li Suan with clock tower)

What will you treasure from a marvellous place like this?
Serenity....Inspiration...or just simply happiness?
Get a taste of life, taste the sweetness of blooming florwers.
PinesResortsmall.jpg

Well, we chose to let our hair down, watched series of television show, talked about good old days, laughed a few jokes. And, we had one superb american breakfast. Awww...that's so privileged.
breakfast.jpg
(Courtesy of Kim Chuan's official website)

Nothing last forever. After one short stay on the hill, we drag ourselves back on the winding road, back to the civilisation, back to the harsh.

Whatever lays in the future, live life to the fullness, don't look back, thou shalt be joyful.

Well, seven generations have since passed and today, Langkawi is a flourishing tourist destination. [photo]

15) Venue: Black sand beach. Some said there are skulls, broken bones and ship wrecks on Black Sand Beach which remains from the great battle between Garuda and Jentayu. Meanwhile, some claims that these remains belong to the traders who sank together with their ships, because of the whirlpools that existed in the Northern part of Langkawi. Creepy jeepy.... [photo]

Win

Win, a verb, to defeat everyone else by being the best or by finishing first in a competition.

You win, you can't win; win hands down, win through; no-win situation, and the best of all kind --> win-win situation.

Since the toddling age, we've been learning to win over parents' attention, to earn caring. Then in kindergarten, we fought for puppy's love. The ego growing in primary, gotta be No.1 in whatever things, from academic to eating speed during recess. And yes, all the way through in our life, whatever we do, is all come to winning at the end. Abo then, what makes u think that the hokkien song 爱拼才会赢 made such a great debut in donkey's years?

langkawi_island.jpg Eagle Square

During my current visit to Langkawi Island, so called 99 islands under the sun, duty-free island. I would really taste the different of cultures between northern and Klang valley. God blessed the taxi's driver in Alor setar! They don't even bother to ask the visitors / passer by if they would like to call for a cab. They were like lay on faith and wait to be call. Is that a good way to strategize their business? I doubt. Then when we landed in Langkawi, so much of a tourism info posted in the internet, hack the 4-stars resort, screw the expensive entrance fees at the attraction spots.

langkawi_galeria_perdana.jpg Galeria Perdana

The A-rated tourism spot i would recommend for those who wants to visit Langkawi is Galeria Perdana, an exhibition hall for Dr Mahathir's souvenirs. The items are really eye opening of seeing the art reaching the limit. Everything are so fine. Items are mostly souvenirs Dr Mahathir received during his diplomatic visit and partly from his fans / supporters. Awesome place, 3 blocks of double-storey fine decorated buildings, cheap entrance fee. RM5 for adult, RM3 for golden veteran above 55yrs old, RM1 for camera.

KIF_0397-crystal.jpg

Again, we can see the "win" culture here. Other country's admin head giving out precious souvenirs as a mark to win over our respect to his, and the other way round.
